Last night’s MoChat had a great turnout to discuss design theory. The conversation evolved into general ways to improve our craft, how to stay sharp, and finding time to learn/practice. Several links were posted with various resources to learn from. Angie Taylor’s Design Essentials for the Motion Media Artist received a few recommendations, as well as Design for Hackers, and Motion Graphics with Adobe Creative Suite 5. The course Kinetic Typography Techniques with After Effects was also recommended as covering design decisions in addition to technique. Greyscale Gorilla’s Five Second Projects were mentioned for practice. And for inspiration the Sullivan & Marks 1978 ABC Demo Reel was posted.
We had a great time last night. Be sure to join us next week at 9PM EDT. Read on for the transcript below…
MotionChat #MoChat starting up. Tonight we’re talking about design theory. -8:01 PM Jul 17th, 2012
conigs Curious about people’s backgrounds. I came into mograph from film school & don’t have as robust of a design background as I’d like. #mochat -8:02 PM Jul 17th, 2012
conigs RT @MotionChat: #MoChat starting up. Tonight we’re talking about design theory. -8:03 PM Jul 17th, 2012
MotionChat We focus so much on the latest plugins and tutorials… How do people keep up with & learn about things like color theory, etc? #MoChat -8:04 PM Jul 17th, 2012
conigs Who’s coming out for #MoChat tonight? @dan_hin @rostenbach @rovino @MDSienzant @eyedesyn @robotika_org @CopperSoffit @beeple @beerad -8:07 PM Jul 17th, 2012
nrogers @conigs I spent 7 years doing broadcast production for local TV Affialtes and have since moved on to agency production #Mochat -8:08 PM Jul 17th, 2012
MaelstromPost Hey #mochat I’m primarily an Editor but have been doing more & more MoGraph. I fund it very rewarding but also very challenging. -8:08 PM Jul 17th, 2012
conigs @nrogers What are the differences in expected skills & knowledge, if any? #mochat -8:09 PM Jul 17th, 2012
MotionChat @MaelstromPost Mograph is almost its own pre pro ,production, and post. Definitely a lot to cover. #MoChat -8:10 PM Jul 17th, 2012
royvsimonds @conigs Drawin, photo, theater, Etch-a-sketch 2000, since a kid. Watched way too much TV. @massart bfa in SIM. #yolo #mochat -8:11 PM Jul 17th, 2012
conigs @royvsimonds Ha. I think TV definitely has an influence over all of us in both film/video & mograph. #mochat -8:12 PM Jul 17th, 2012
conigs How did people go about learning not just the nuts & bolts of @AdobeAE & Cinema 4D, but design in general? #mochat -8:14 PM Jul 17th, 2012
bkbkbk @conigs I started doing simple comps in FCP v2 or v3 in high school. My head damn near exploded when I discovered AE in college #mochat -8:14 PM Jul 17th, 2012
conigs @nrogers Recently left “full-time” client/freelance work and am now in-house. Agency work has a lot of pressure with billable hours. #mochat -8:15 PM Jul 17th, 2012
bkbkbk @conigs It really started clicking when I started working in broadcast at @WSVN. Had to make things very visually clean+pretty #mochat -8:16 PM Jul 17th, 2012
bkbkbk @conigs It really started clicking when I started working in broadcast at @WSVN. Had to make things very visually clean+pretty+fast #mochat -8:16 PM Jul 17th, 2012
nrogers @conigs I spend alot of time trying to recreate what I see with the human eye. #mochat -8:16 PM Jul 17th, 2012
conigs @bkbkbk We referred to those as “vertical edits”. Lot’s of stacking layers. It was fun doing that in Avid Meridien. #mochat -8:16 PM Jul 17th, 2012
AdobePremiere @conigs I really like Angie Taylor’s “Design Essentials for the Motion Media Artist” book: http://t.co/TZQUXr7p #mochat -8:16 PM Jul 17th, 2012
Motionworks MOCHAT | I’ve had no formal design training. #mochat -8:16 PM Jul 17th, 2012
nrogers @Motionworks none of mine is formal either, trial by fire here #mochat -8:17 PM Jul 17th, 2012
Oddernod @conigs What’s the site for #mochat? I’d like to follow along tonight in one spot rather than on tweetdeck… -8:17 PM Jul 17th, 2012
AdobeAE Join us now on #mochat for a discussion of design, typography, and other essential for motion graphics: http://t.co/xoj69Hzs -8:17 PM Jul 17th, 2012
conigs @Motionworks Was it trial & error, or did you have mentors help you along? Both? #mochat -8:18 PM Jul 17th, 2012
nrogers @Oddernod try http://t.co/hNvZs9mu#mochat -8:18 PM Jul 17th, 2012
nrogers I was forced to learn AE when I first broke into the industry found it much easier and usable than the Media 100 editor we had. #mochat -8:19 PM Jul 17th, 2012
kyl33t @conigs honestly, a lot of theory classes always seemed v obvious to me. I think it’s a natural intuition. #mochat -8:19 PM Jul 17th, 2012
conigs I still like to brush up on basics. Picked up Design for Hackers. Presents design from a slightly different POV http://t.co/sIbdIq6r #mochat -8:19 PM Jul 17th, 2012
J0NParker Learnt through tutorials then through uni and just finished my 1st year with a 2:1 also Ive heard of mograph but not sure what it is #mochat -8:19 PM Jul 17th, 2012
MaelstromPost “@nrogers: @Motionworks none of mine is formal either, trial by fire here #mochat†im in the same boat. -8:20 PM Jul 17th, 2012
bkbkbk @nrogers Jesus. Regular cutting was bad enough on Media100. Can’t imagine any mo’. #MoChat -8:20 PM Jul 17th, 2012
Motionworks MOCHAT | Knowing design theory is one thing, having a “feel” for what works is another. It’s something you live. #mochat -8:20 PM Jul 17th, 2012
MotionChat @J0NParker Mograph is just short for motion design/motion graphics. Broadly covers pretty much anything that moves on screen. #mochat -8:20 PM Jul 17th, 2012
J0NParker RT @Motionworks: MOCHAT | Knowing design theory is one thing, having a “feel” for what works is another. It’s something you live. #mochat -8:21 PM Jul 17th, 2012
nrogers @bkbkbk Hey it had #BorisFX and Grafitti #mochat -8:21 PM Jul 17th, 2012
MotionChat RT @Motionworks: MOCHAT | Knowing design theory is one thing, having a “feel” for what works is another. It’s something you live. #mochat -8:21 PM Jul 17th, 2012
kyl33t @conigs learning practical application of design for me came as trial by fire after school. Emulating designs I saw. #mochat -8:22 PM Jul 17th, 2012
Motionworks MOCHAT | I’ve had mo mentors, just learned from watching others, practice and loads of experimentation. #mochat -8:22 PM Jul 17th, 2012
nrogers RT @Motionworks: MOCHAT | Knowing design theory is one thing, having a “feel” for what works is another. It’s something you live. #mochat -8:22 PM Jul 17th, 2012
MotionChat @Motionworks With only so many hours in a day, you think it’s more important to study other’s work, or just play around? #mochat -8:22 PM Jul 17th, 2012
Oddernod @motionworks “It’s something you live” – incredible quote. I’ve run into lots of artists who don’t like trying to always catch up #mochat -8:23 PM Jul 17th, 2012
JustinYounger @MotionChat @Motionworks Play around!!! #mochat -8:23 PM Jul 17th, 2012
MaelstromPost @kyl33t @conigs I totally agree. I do find being a musician helps. I’ll watch an animation like its a piece of music . #mochat -8:23 PM Jul 17th, 2012
conigs There’s definitely a feel you develop as you progress, but I think it’s also important to know why certain things work. #mochat -8:23 PM Jul 17th, 2012
Oddernod @MotionChat I think you’ve got to find a balance – you should always be experimenting but it’s important to see how others play too! #mochat -8:23 PM Jul 17th, 2012
nrogers Some of the best things I have found about design theory is to break it down to its simplest forms… Light, Focus, Dimension ect. #mochat -8:23 PM Jul 17th, 2012
Motionworks MOCHAT | @MotionChat it’s best to do a little of both but playing around is very important to develop your own style. #mochat -8:24 PM Jul 17th, 2012
J0NParker @MotionChat @Motionworks both! you need inspiration but you need to figure things out for yourself and learn your own techniques #mochat -8:24 PM Jul 17th, 2012
kyl33t @conigs definitely. Was lucky in my first post-college job to be able to experiment. Was terrified I would run out of ideas tho. #mochat -8:24 PM Jul 17th, 2012
nrogers I see things I like, but I always look for a way to Own the look and make it my own. @Motionworks #mochat -8:25 PM Jul 17th, 2012
conigs I really like to watch other’s work, and instead of trying to figure out HOW something was done, I try to figure out WHY. #mochat -8:25 PM Jul 17th, 2012
J0NParker I think its important to add in here the importance of sound design ina piece of work, agreed? #mochat -8:26 PM Jul 17th, 2012
conigs @J0NParker Sound can make or break a piece for sure! #mochat -8:26 PM Jul 17th, 2012
MaelstromPost @conigs this is a great tip. At some point the HOW becomes the easy part. #mochat -8:27 PM Jul 17th, 2012
PromoMotion @Motionworks Self taught as well, studied film/TV; but did the first photoshop class my university ever offered (v2 on a MacII ci!) #mochat -8:27 PM Jul 17th, 2012
bkbkbk @J0NParker My first swoosh was a lifechanger.#MoChat -8:28 PM Jul 17th, 2012
joelyeaton @conigs I’m a editor who didn’t start getting work when i graduated till I taught myself mograph. #mochat -8:28 PM Jul 17th, 2012
nrogers @bkbkbk I don’t think the average viewer understands how many Wooshes we listen too before we pick that “One” we actually use #mochat -8:29 PM Jul 17th, 2012
conigs How do people break of out of style ruts? I frequently find myself designing in monochrome and I don’t know why? #mochat -8:30 PM Jul 17th, 2012
VinhSonNguyen @MaelstromPost Definitely, the “how†part sometimes become irrelevant and you always try to find better way! #mochat -8:30 PM Jul 17th, 2012
conigs @nrogers @bkbkbk I think we all have that “swoosh” folder with hundreds of different options. #mochat -8:30 PM Jul 17th, 2012
J0NParker its half 2 in the morning i have loads of motion graphics and editing to do before more filming in 10 hours and i cant get enough of #mochat -8:31 PM Jul 17th, 2012
conigs I wish more people understood this! #mochat RT @joelyeaton: @conigs on the other hand limits are the basis of creativity. -8:31 PM Jul 17th, 2012
VinhSonNguyen @conigs I use Kuler sometimes to purposely throw my style off and attempt new things. #mochat -8:32 PM Jul 17th, 2012
justwinston @conigs I’m in the middle of a project RIGHT NOW that I can’t solve. Thus my lack of participation. #mochat -8:32 PM Jul 17th, 2012
nrogers @conigs I try and play them out.eventually I get tired of those ruts… that being said I still always fall back to lens flare trans #mochat -8:32 PM Jul 17th, 2012
MaelstromPost @conigs I like to look at old album art work Verve Atlantic Prestige records as well as architecture. It usually sparks an idea. #mochat -8:32 PM Jul 17th, 2012
big3jv MOCHAT no formal training here either. I agree you learn by experimenting, find what you like and your style is developed #mochat -8:32 PM Jul 17th, 2012
VinhSonNguyen RT @conigs: @nrogers @bkbkbk I think we all have that “swoosh” folder with hundreds of different options. #mochat -8:32 PM Jul 17th, 2012
p0stmarc @conigs Could be a grass is always greener situation, but coming from design & learning motion on my own, I find it hard to keep up. #mochat -8:33 PM Jul 17th, 2012
J0NParker Favourite pioneers anyone mine has to be Pablo Ferro or Saul Bass (the fairly big ones) #mochat -8:34 PM Jul 17th, 2012
RagingClaw @MotionChat @conigs trying with tweetdeck as I’m on my phone. I actually got my degree in graphic design and art #mochat -8:34 PM Jul 17th, 2012
conigs @VinhSonNguyen Actually, maybe that will be my warm up tomorrow morning… random picture, extract color palette, design something. #mochat -8:34 PM Jul 17th, 2012
nrogers @p0stmarc never try to keep up, the best practice is to inovate. #mochat -8:34 PM Jul 17th, 2012
conigs @nrogers @p0stmarc I think it’s important to know what others are doing, though. #mochat -8:35 PM Jul 17th, 2012
Hitecsoftouch RT @Motionworks: MOCHAT | Knowing design theory is one thing, having a “feel” for what works is another. It’s something you live. #mochat -8:35 PM Jul 17th, 2012
RagingClaw @conigs I had always dreamed of working for Pixar, but when only 6 people took the 3d path at the university they scrapped it #mochat -8:36 PM Jul 17th, 2012
conigs Curious… I know many illustrators & animators do warm ups before working… just short exercises. How many designers do that? #mochat -8:36 PM Jul 17th, 2012
j_salvo @nrogers @conigs star wipes! #mochat -8:36 PM Jul 17th, 2012
MaelstromPost @J0NParker have you seen the new Saul Bass book yet? #Amazing. I was really surprised at the amount of logos he designed. #mochat -8:36 PM Jul 17th, 2012
RagingClaw @conigs so graphic design was the next choice. #mochat -8:36 PM Jul 17th, 2012
Oddernod @J0NParker Absolutely – I learned this lesson really late in the game. Had a character animator teach me to never forget sound. #mochat -8:37 PM Jul 17th, 2012
odd_enough Alright, joining in my first session of #mochat. I’ve found that I know very little when it comes to personal style. I just.. do things. -8:37 PM Jul 17th, 2012
mographbot MoGraph on the mind RT @/MaelstromPost: Hey #mochat I’m primarily an Editor but have been doing more & more MoGraph. I fund it very r… -8:38 PM Jul 17th, 2012
conigs @MaelstromPost @J0NParker Saul Bass is hands down my favorite title (and maybe just general) designer. #mochat -8:38 PM Jul 17th, 2012
ZLovatt What do you guys think about a dedicated, 1-year intensive post-grad mograph school program? #mochat -8:38 PM Jul 17th, 2012
MotionChat RT @odd_enough: Alright, joining in my first session of #mochat. I’ve found that I know very little when it comes to personal style. I just.. do things. -8:38 PM Jul 17th, 2012
RagingClaw @conigs my warmups consist of a good batch of Buffalo wings lol #mochat -8:38 PM Jul 17th, 2012
conigs @odd_enough And that’s a great way to learn & progress. #mochat -8:39 PM Jul 17th, 2012
rovino Sorry for the lateness #mochat -8:39 PM Jul 17th, 2012
conigs @ZLovatt It would have to be more than just “here’s how to use After Effects”, though. A lot of programs are just that. #mochat -8:39 PM Jul 17th, 2012
starlinex @conigs Depends on the mood I’m in. Sometimes I’ll do a bunch of warm-ups. Other times I’ll just dive right into the illustration. #mochat -8:39 PM Jul 17th, 2012
p0stmarc @odd_enough Could argue that’s the only way to find your style! #mochat -8:39 PM Jul 17th, 2012
Oddernod @ZLovatt I’d rather take super focused short workshops in related things: photography, 2D animation, anything to expand creativity #mochat -8:40 PM Jul 17th, 2012
RagingClaw @odd_enough yeah im an ‘it is what it is’ kind of guy, but I’m never happy with it regardless #mochat -8:40 PM Jul 17th, 2012
rovino @odd_enough oddly enough I feel the same way about my “style” #mochat -8:40 PM Jul 17th, 2012
FenixColorado @RagingClaw first comment ever on #mochat…but this is man after my own heart! haha nice! -8:40 PM Jul 17th, 2012
MaelstromPost Saul Bass: A Life in Film and Design by Jennifer Bass http://t.co/KN3IJOU9 via @amazon #mochat. Worth every penny. -8:40 PM Jul 17th, 2012
J0NParker @conigs @MaelstromPost kyle cooper aswell with the se7en title sequence (for its time was very *cutting edge8 😛 #mochat -8:40 PM Jul 17th, 2012
conigs @Oddernod @ZLovatt I would love to get back into photography. #mochat -8:41 PM Jul 17th, 2012
odd_enough @conigs Doing things, anything/everything, has gotten me further than most any other method I’ve tried for progressing skill. #mochat -8:41 PM Jul 17th, 2012
rovino @conigs I wonder if you have some examples of said warm ups? #mochat -8:41 PM Jul 17th, 2012
nrogers @rovino better late than never right? #mochat -8:41 PM Jul 17th, 2012
AdobeAE I found this kinetic typography course to be useful because it goes into so much depth about design decisions http://t.co/KFH44L2b #mochat -8:41 PM Jul 17th, 2012
Oddernod Try to find new inspiration heroes as often as I can: guys like Rian Hughes, Chase Jarvis, or Bill Watterson have popped up for me #mochat -8:41 PM Jul 17th, 2012
nrogers @conigs @Oddernod @ZLovatt I do photography as a hobby, I love it and it helps me see things in entirely different ways #mochat -8:42 PM Jul 17th, 2012
Oddernod @J0NParker I’m sure you already have but look up Danny Yount’s recent work if you’re a Kyle Cooper fan #mochat -8:43 PM Jul 17th, 2012
conigs @rovino Sketching. Strictly transform keyframes on basic shapes. Quick modeling. This was my warm up yesterday: http://t.co/316yQJSu #mochat -8:43 PM Jul 17th, 2012
RagingClaw @rovino I just had some samples of mine, but they are gone now #mochat -8:43 PM Jul 17th, 2012
odd_enough And when I say that, I mean.. not caring about what the end goal is. Just go with the knowledge that I could fail, but learn from it #mochat -8:43 PM Jul 17th, 2012
conigs Is anyone taking the Typography in Title Design course at @FXPHD this term? #mochat -8:44 PM Jul 17th, 2012
nrogers @conigs @rovino I find looking at things not at all related to what I am working on to give a spark, I love stumbleupon #mochat -8:44 PM Jul 17th, 2012
odd_enough Apparently I need to learn to type faster, too O_o #mochat -8:45 PM Jul 17th, 2012
AdobeAE Greyscale Gorilla’s “five-second project” contests are a great way to try new things within tight constraints: http://t.co/0Aq78vRu #mochat -8:45 PM Jul 17th, 2012
conigs @AdobeAE Typography is definitely something I always want to learn more about. #mochat -8:45 PM Jul 17th, 2012
lasvideo I like to learn thru tutorials, then alter to my needs. Just me changing them adds new manifestation. #mochat -8:46 PM Jul 17th, 2012
p0stmarc @conigs Curious to also know how many actually sketch, storyboard, mockup, etc… For me it’s too easy to get sidetracked without. #mochat -8:46 PM Jul 17th, 2012
RagingClaw @odd_enough yeah, I find pushing buttons at random has honestly helped me figure things out. I learn when I fail. #mochat -8:46 PM Jul 17th, 2012
JustinYounger @conigs @AdobeAE I bought a bunch of used amazon typography books for dirt cheap. I also had a roommate that was a huge type head, #mochat -8:46 PM Jul 17th, 2012
conigs @rovino The thing is to make it brief… just enough to get your brain working. #mochat -8:46 PM Jul 17th, 2012
ZLovatt All this sketching/drawing talk– is anyone else as entirely useless behind a pen and paper as I? #mochat -8:47 PM Jul 17th, 2012
J0NParker typography is so expressive and useful it can tell the story for you, i would hate to design a typeface but i love working with it #mochat -8:47 PM Jul 17th, 2012
nrogers @RagingClaw depends on the project with me, a lot of time I’m not sure what I’m doing til its done #mochat -8:47 PM Jul 17th, 2012
conigs @p0stmarc Now that I’m more responsible for the pre-production in my work, I always at least sketch things out first. #mochat -8:48 PM Jul 17th, 2012
nrogers YES! RT @ZLovatt: All this sketching/drawing talk– is anyone else as entirely useless behind a pen and paper as I? #mochat -8:48 PM Jul 17th, 2012
rovino @nrogers @conigs @Oddernod @ZLovatt Yes. This is why I like #instagram. I like playing with compositing with just a sq. ratio #mochat -8:48 PM Jul 17th, 2012
RagingClaw Despite some of the minor issues we had yesterday, I think that @CubePong is a fantastic way to get the gears turning #mochat -8:48 PM Jul 17th, 2012
conigs @ZLovatt I’m pretty awful at sketching. Trying to get better, though. #mochat -8:48 PM Jul 17th, 2012
FenixColorado @ZLovatt This is definitely me. But give me some 3d motion tracking…Im ready to go ha #mochat -8:48 PM Jul 17th, 2012
lasvideo There is such a wealth of stimulation for ideas on the web its hard not to be inspired or excited with a new technique #mochat -8:48 PM Jul 17th, 2012
PromoMotion @AdobeAE did you see this post of mine? http://t.co/FRpkhnOD #mochat -8:49 PM Jul 17th, 2012
conigs @J0NParker How do you go about picking fonts for a project if there’s no set style/brand guidelines? #mochat -8:49 PM Jul 17th, 2012
conigs @JustinYounger @AdobeAE Have any good ones you’d recommend? #mochat -8:50 PM Jul 17th, 2012
peripatew I’ve got not formal design training, just learning as I go. Love learning from people via video tuts. Taking @fxphd #mochat -8:50 PM Jul 17th, 2012
MaelstromPost @lasvideo big fan of doing Tutorials. I agree 100%. Alter concepts to fit needs to work more efficiently. I owe a lot to VCP & COW #mochat -8:50 PM Jul 17th, 2012
MotionChat 10 more minutes of #mochat everyone! At least, “officially”. Always keep the conversation going! -8:50 PM Jul 17th, 2012
ZLovatt Followup: non-drawers, how are you on the design/conceptual side, versus execution/technical expertise? #mochat -8:50 PM Jul 17th, 2012
peripatew And I don’t have much time to “warm up”, as my time is so limited as is. Design on the side 🙁 #mochat -8:50 PM Jul 17th, 2012
lasvideo I steal from the best and in the creative process variation makes it my own. #mochat -8:51 PM Jul 17th, 2012
J0NParker @conigs well im only in Uniatm and after looking at the brief for my title design project I found a suitable one nd tested it #mochat -8:51 PM Jul 17th, 2012
RagingClaw One problem I run into is that I’m too concerned with having ‘too much’ of an inspirational piece embedded into my own #mochat -8:51 PM Jul 17th, 2012
conigs @ZLovatt Definitely stronger on execution than concept for me. #mochat -8:51 PM Jul 17th, 2012
postman07 RT @Motionworks: MOCHAT | Knowing design theory is one thing, having a “feel” for what works is another. It’s something you live. #mochat -8:51 PM Jul 17th, 2012
JustinYounger @conigs @AdobeAE Remind me tomorrow, they are at work. #mochat -8:51 PM Jul 17th, 2012
rovino I dont sketch. I know my limitations and drawing isnt my strong suit.. but I do consider myself a compositor. #mochat.. -8:52 PM Jul 17th, 2012
MotionChat RT @ZLovatt: Followup: non-drawers, how are you on the design/conceptual side, versus execution/technical expertise? #mochat -8:52 PM Jul 17th, 2012
RagingClaw Not sure if I’m saying that in a way it makes sense.. I feel like I’m copying I guess, even if I know I’m not. #mochat -8:52 PM Jul 17th, 2012
odd_enough still behind in convo, i feel personal style is subjective to the people who view it. You don’t set your style. it shows on its own #mochat -8:52 PM Jul 17th, 2012
nrogers @ZLovatt I like to say I’m strong on both sides, sometime I have a difficult time communicating whats in my head though #mochat -8:52 PM Jul 17th, 2012
conigs @RagingClaw It’s definitely tough to feel like you’re not copying someone else, even if subconsciously. #mochat -8:53 PM Jul 17th, 2012
AdobeAE @conigs These books have good sections on type in the context of motion graphics: http://t.co/2Z4p0KGH and http://t.co/76648aXz #mochat -8:53 PM Jul 17th, 2012
Oddernod @conigs Logo, Font, & Lettering Bible by Leslie Cabarga is my go to typography suggestion book #mochat -8:53 PM Jul 17th, 2012
nrogers @odd_enough I’ve had people point out things in my work that are similar and I thought the pieces were entirely different #mochat -8:54 PM Jul 17th, 2012
lasvideo I wish I hard formal training in Graphic design. Im just an editor that expanded into needed skills. I improvise with what I have. #mochat -8:54 PM Jul 17th, 2012
MaelstromPost @nrogers @zlovatt I’ve been trying to draw more. A lot of gfx designers say Drawing helps improve MoGraph. I’m not that good at it. #mochat -8:54 PM Jul 17th, 2012
AdobeAE @conigs It seems to me that most artists develop skills through some (a lot of) copying and then expand from that as skills grow. #mochat -8:54 PM Jul 17th, 2012
