This week on #mochat, we covered pitching to clients. There was a little confusion surrounding the concept of a pitch. For some, a pitch is how you get a client, requiring a lot of upfront work and eating costs just to get a job. My initial idea of a pitch was assuming you already have a job, but are in the process of pre-production and generating concepts and getting buy-off on the creative. Both were discussed—the former especially stirring up passion in a few people.

Generally speaking, the following seemed to resonate with people

  • Unpaid pitches solicited by clients to gain work show a lack of trust
  • Focus on the core message and explain how your idea furthers that message
  • “Why” over the “how”… don’t get too technical, if at all
